Bedbugs FAQS
T-Detect, Geneva responds to all your questions about bedbugs.
Bed bugs are 5-6 mm long, oval-shaped, brownish insects. They are flattened from the back to the belly, which allows them to easily crawl into the seams of mattresses, cracks in floors and various nooks and crannies of homes.
The eggs are white in colour, average 1 mm in length and will hatch after 10-14 days. The eggs are usually laid in cracks, crevices, etc.
The nymphs are the same shape as the adult insect but are a few millimetres smaller.
Adult bed bugs have an average life span of 5 months if they feed regularly. When fasting, the adult can survive 18 to 24 months in a dormant state.
It has not been proven that bed bug bites can carry disease or viruses. However, the severity of a reaction to a bedbug bite varies from person to person.
The vast majority of cases show that people carry bed bugs from an infested area into their homes, particularly in their suitcases but also in their clothes, bedding, etc.
- Watch for any suspicious bites.
- Avoid bringing home second-hand objects without having meticulously inspected and cleaned them.
- Keep the accommodation clean without cluttering unnecessary objects.
- Vacuum regularly.
Bedbugs are difficult to observe because they avoid natural and artificial light. You should ask yourself when you notice:
- Itching in the morning.
- Bites on the skin, usually in a straight line.
- Traces of their droppings, small black dots of 1 to 3 mm, on the seams of the mattress and small blood stains on the sheets, due to the crushing of the bedbugs when you sleep.
